Go ‘Inside the Archive’ at Cardiff Animation Festival 2026

The BFI National Archive looks after one of the largest and most important collections of film and television in the world. Its teams of experts ensure that the collections are preserved and developed for future generations and made widely accessible to today’s audiences.

This multimedia installation invites visitors to explore this work and learn about the people who make it possible. Delivered in partnership with Cardiff Animation Festival, come and learn how a film archive works in this new exhibition, on display in Cinema Foyer from Friday 23 – Sunday 26 April.

​

Younger guests are also invited to free drop-in activities, where they will be able to handle rare film formats, operate a 16mm film viewer and create their own hand drawn animation film strips. Drop in anytime from 10am – 4pm to participate.

The exhibition is supported by the BFI Screen Heritage Fund, awarding National Lottery funding.
